Genitourinary Program at the Karmanos Cancer Institute
The Genitourinary Oncology Program was established as a developmental program in the Karmanos Cancer Institute in 1992, and achieved status as a full program in 1996. Our goal is to investigate the epidemiology, mechanisms, and pathogenesis of urologic cancers. We strongly believe that this is best accomplished by translating basic research laboratory findings into clinical trials.
The growth and activity of this program has been significant. Presently, there are twenty members in the GU Oncology Program, including four urologists, three medical oncologists, two radiation therapists, two pathologists, a biostatistician and eight basic scientists. The members of the GU Oncology Program are very well funded with 19 grants totaling over seven million dollars. In 1996 approximately 35 peer review journal articles and book chapters were published. The foundation for the success of the GU Oncology Program is based on the close working relationship of all the members of the program.
Because of our affiliation with the Karmanos Cancer Institute, a National Comprehensive Cancer Center, we are able to offer state-of-the-art care for all urologic cancers. We have expertise in all facets of urologic-oncology including kidney, bladder, prostate, penile and testicular cancer. By utilizing a multidisciplinary approach we are able to offer optimal care for the individual patient. A few of the projects in this program are highlighted below.
